    Bleed calculator

Set up print artwork at the trim size plus the bleed on every edge. With the 3mm Australian printers ask for, a 90 × 55mm business card becomes a 96 × 61mm document. This works out the size for any trim, in millimetres and in pixels at 300dpi, and shows the working.

    01/What the numbers mean

    Trim

The finished size after the guillotine. This is the size you quote to a printer and the size the piece is in the customer’s hand.

    Bleed

Artwork that runs past the trim so the cut has something to go through. Extend the background into it. Scaling the design up to fill it moves every margin.

    Safe area

The opposite margin: text and logos stay at least 4mm inside the trim, so a cut that wanders does not take a word off the edge.

The guide to business card size in Australia covers resolution and colour as well. Our business card templates and menu, flyer and print templates download with the bleed already in place, built by extending the artwork.
